1. Design efficiency
Every part starts with design. Although the final product may be very different from the original sketch, the design of the part has a large impact on the final manufacturing cost.
That's why creative product designers need to know all about engineering and manufacturing. Without telling the ins and outs of the manufacturing process, costs could skyrocket.
So how does design efficiency affect manufacturing costs?
It all comes down to manufacturing design (DfM), which is the principle of designing parts based on the manufacturing process, not just the user application of the finished product.
Whether you use CNC machining, injection molding, die casting or other processes completely, it is worthwhile to design a part
A) a manufacturing range suitable for the manufacturing machine,
B) no geometric difficulties for the machine,
C) can be manufactured by the machine using as little excess material as possible, and

2. Find the right partner
When outsourcing manufacturing to a third party, even the most effective design can be compromised by choosing the wrong partner.
It is difficult to assess the qualifications of each candidate because of the many options available.
Contrary to intuition, to find a cost-effective manufacturing partner, you need to partially ignore costs-at least in face value.
That's because the compelling quote says only half. If manufacturing partners do not have the highest level of skills or reliability, these costs may eventually increase.
If you order a prototype from a budget manufacturer, it may not matter if the part has the highest quality. And, if it's not available, you may be able to get your money back.
However, if you need to place an order for 10,000 units and the quality of delivery is below the standard level, then you will face a real problem. Even if the defect is covered under warranty, the cost impact of delayed shipments can be significant.
In any case, look for low-cost manufacturing solutions, but keep in mind that in the long run, quality and reliability can ultimately save you money, while at the same time objectively improve your business prospects by improving your products.
3. From prototype to production
The ability to reduce manufacturing costs often depends on treating the product cycle as a whole.
This can work in a number of ways. However, consideration must be given to how different iterations of the product relate to each other in the product cycle and how aspects of the consolidation cycle can minimize expenditure.
Therefore, the relationship between prototype and production can be key.
While it is tempting to think of prototyping as a development phase and separate from manufacturing, hiring a prototype partner to provide at least bridge production services (if not thousands of mass production) can be profitable.
This is because low-cost prototyping services + low-cost manufacturing services do not necessarily mean low-cost projects.
